Assertiveness Exercise for Work – Try It!

The DESC Script – Use the four components below to write out how you would handle each vignette.

1- Describe the problem or issue

2- Express your feelings about the issue

3- Specify what you want the other person to do. Be specific about when you want them to do it and briefly explain your purpose.

4- Consequences for not following through on what you are requesting. Don’t be harsh and think small consequences like documenting problems and or going together to another person.

Situation #1:  Your assistant has just returned from lunch 30 minutes late. This is the third time in two weeks that he has done this. His lateness has caused the assistant of the manager in the next office to have to delay her lunch break, causing her to miss a doctor’s appointment.

Situation #2:  You are responsible for human resources in a small company. This morning, you discovered that the manager of operations is bringing in an outside consultant to run some training workshops. He has not consulted you.

Situation #3:  You are planning a vacation in July to attend a family reunion. Your boss knows that you have been planning this event for a long time. Today you find out that your boss has made plans to be gone the same week for an educational seminar. There is a policy in your company that only one person from any department may be away from the office at a given time.
