“Don’t just do something, stand there!” for Leaders

pexels-photo-423364.jpegNo, really, we got that right. Don’t just do something stand there! Usually you hear it the other way around: “Don’t just stand there, do something!”

But that’s not what we’re talking about today. In leadership taking action is very important most of the time. Sometimes it’s not. Those times are when we just need to stand there look, listen and observe. Here are some tips for the “stand there” part that can help you be a more effective leader.

Stand, wait and observe with all your senses. What do you see, here and feel? What are others in the situation seeing, hearing and feeling?

Listening means that you’re hearing what others feel as well as your own feelings.

Looking means looking at body language in this situation and also trying to conceptualize what is going on. It can mean trying to understand other’s point of view.

Going further, empathy helps you jump into the other persons viewpoint with all your senses. Exploring the other person’s feelings will open up more and more about the situation.

At this point you can bring in the cognitive aspects. Looking at what you and the other people involved believe or want can create more and more understanding. We want to learn to evaluate and not judge.

Respond rather than react. Reacting is a knee jerk motion in response to something you feel. Responding means you slowed things down and you’re using your head more.

After you have stood for a while, observed, looked, listened and evaluated what is going on you may find it easier to make a decision and a better one at that.
